"Kom Loi"

It is age old tradition to light these hot air balloons to send your bad luck away
in order to allow good luck to come during special occasions.

The wick is soaked with bees wax to provide a heat source while it ascends to the heavens. They are great fun if be it a little noisy as firecrackers are an option as they hang from the balloon as it ascends.

Everyone loves them at anytime but for weddings they are  bit different. As is tradition wedding ones are handmade by Buddhist monks at local rural village temple where they are also blessed and some will be written on in "Pali" language in order to bring the new couples great happiness and long life together. So don't think they are all the same in size or meaning.
